Well there's a very broad spectrum of view within each party, so there's no perfect answer but generally:

Democrats are for government having more control of business and other public works.
Democrats typically call for universal health care.
Republicans typically are okay with the death penalty.
Republicans take a much more conservative view of social issues like gay marriage, abortion, stem cell research.

But again, there are no absolutes.
References :
Republicans:
--believe in the constitution
--believe in the government not controlling very much of what the people can do. they think that the government should only be there for protective reasons
--conservative views

Democrats:
--believe that the government should control many things so that this nation doesn't get out of hand
--believe in giving to the people who may not deserve it (ex. providing food stamps for a lady who uses her money for crack)
--liberal views
References :
well the main difference is that the democratic party is liberal in social and economic issues, the republican party is conservative on social and economic issues
which basically means democrats want more social rights, but less corporate ones; and republicans want more corporate freedoms but less social ones

the libertarian party is liberal on social issues and conservative on economic issues, which means more social and more economic rights

hope i helped =]
References :
Libertarian =]
