America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the main health insurance industry lobbyist group, was having a “health care reform” conference, trying to pay lip service to reform while at the same time, opposing the heart of President Obama’s health care reform plan. We wanted to make sure America saw through the insurance industry’s lies. They are the enemy of health care reform.

A broad coalition of reform supporters, from proponents of Obama’s health care plan to single payer advocates, tried to present Karen Ignagni, AHIP’s CEO, with an award for “Best Protector of Profits at the Expense of Our Health.” She was too scared to face the crowd and accept the award, but Health Care for America Now will make sure it follows her around the country until she accepts.

The focus is the extremes Congressional leaders and the Administration have gone to in order to secure yes votes. Congressmen Costa & Cardoza of California are singled out for allowing the Administration to hold Central Valley water allocations hostage in exchange for their yes votes. What kind of “nation” withholds vital natural resources like WATER from its own people to get it’s way? Not the America we all remember.

On October 28th, 1997, House Speaker Newt Gingrich and President Bill Clinton held a secret meeting where they reached a groundbreaking deal to create a centrist political coalition to reform Social Security and Medicare. Although the Lewinsky scandal ultimately undermined their agreement, the efforts of these men, and others in Congress, might serve as a model for members of both parties interested in addressing the long-term shortfalls in the nation’s entitlement programs.

Steven Gillon discussed the details of how this secret agreement came to be, as first revealed in his new book, The Pact: Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and the Rivalry That Defined a Generation. Gillon was joined by Charles Blahous and Ed Lorenzen, who were involved in bipartisan reform efforts during Clinton’s presidency, working on opposite sides of the aisle. The panelists discussed what can be learned from the reform efforts of the 1990s, and address the question of whether, and in what political environment, entitlement reform is possible.

As President Obama pushes to enact an alternative plan, organizers and policy makers must work the devil out of the details. Join Momentum for a candid, up-to-the-minute conversation on where the debate stands, what is missing and how to best provide affordable healthcare access for all Americans. – Momentum Conference

Anthony Wright is Executive Director for Health Access California, the statewide health care consumer advocacy coalition which has been a leader in both state and national efforts to fight health care budget cuts, to win consumer protections, and to advance comprehensive health reform and coverage expansions. Wright led fights to pass a first-in-the-nation law to set standards for timely access to care, and a first-in-the-nation law against hospital overcharging of the uninsured, and to win a prescription drug discount program despite an $80 million industry campaign against it.

A consumer advocate and community organizer. Wright has been widely quoted in local and national media on a range of issues. He has also worked for New Jersey Citizen Action, the Center for Media Education, The Nation magazine, and in Vice President Gore’s office in the White House.
