Why is Canada obligated to do anything for USA?

After watching this Fox News video from a month back
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krgTSg_cJD0&feature=PlayList&p=07190549DC5AF180&index=2
where Americans made fun of Canada’s military efforts in Afghanistan (in the wake of 8 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives), I ask this question.
Come to think of it, Canada should say "You know? You’re right, America. We (Canada) should change our military strategy, from now on, we should put our soldiers to better use than fighting your American wars. We should take a 1,000 year rest-up from your Afghan war and reassess your significance to us as an ALLY.
We Canadians were weak, unfortunately, we were dupes to ever waste a single precious Canadian life on your STUPID American War caused by your own STUPID foreign policies. And maybe you Americans if you’re the most powerful country in the universe, should have no problem taking on both the Afghan and Iraq war with no assistance. If your army is so strong, then all 35 coalition countries….are wasting their resources? Why should they even bother?
I ask myself this as an American. Has Canada not met every NATO commitment ever demanded of it since NATO’s formation? Has Canada not demonstrated military loyalty in WWI and WWII (since the war’s beginning), not after a surprise attack on Pearl ? Has Canada not provided military and economic aid in almost every international crisis since Canada has been a country? How would the US respond if they fought a war on behalf of an ALLY and that ALLY posted THIS news spectacle the day after US Soldiers were ambushed and killed?
And does the Canadian army not exercise better judgment than the US army in knowing WHEN a war is a threat, WHEN to enter a war, WHEN a war/occupation is unnecessary?
I honestly think the Afghan War is the last war NATO should partake in in defending the United States. After this, NATO should consider a degree of separation from the United States, all countries should consider alternative markets to the US consumer market,
and when the US is in dire straits, Canada should match Fox News’s apology and say "We’re very sorry, we’ll send you some clean-X soft tissues to dry your tears."
Canada should not stand for this. Canada needs to speak up.
I have to say as an American born in America, this video struck a nerve with me. I can only imagine how it affected Canadian viewers.
IT struck me also on a personal level because I feel my own tax dollars were robbed on the Iraq War and I am embarassed to have Fox MEDIA network speaking on behalf of ME and spitting out garbage and knowing not even that Canadians are on the front lines????!
The USA should also consider themselves lucky that Canadians have good standing with the rest of the world because if Canada did get invaded, I’m not so sure the USA would be competent enough to win that battle either.
I mean…perhaps the US forces would be told the capital of Canada is under attack, and US-backed forces would send their troops to Toronto
FYI: NATO did NOT approve of US invasion into Iraq. AFTER the invasion, some countries offered help in exchange for money and promises from the USA. The UN approved the transition government in Iraq once the damage was already done. What else could they do about it at that point?
In fact, the United State Congress did not even consent directly to the Iraq invasion. They indirectly did by granting the power to the President to use what is needed in a time of war, trusting the president would not abuse this privilege.
totally agree.
while we’re at it we should re-write NAFTA and save our own oil for ourselves…. sick of getting no military appreciation… also sick of being raped for resources without a thank you.

The reason is because Canada is in NATO. All countries that are in NATO are toadies for the USA.

I was really enraged by this too. It was horrifically bad timing as well – we had lost some of our soldiers that very week. Thank you for understanding this from the opposite end.

I think you pretty well summed the whole thing up. We have lived up to every commitment we have made and although we may not be the biggest and scariest, we get the job done, long before that became a catch phrase.
I bet Fox media completely overlooked the fact that it was American weekend warriors who bombed a Canadian detachment on the ground in Afghanistan, killing three soldiers, and this long before any American soldier set foot in Afghanistan. You bombed them, but we went in and did your grunt work.
You’re right. Why should we.

As a Canadian and as a Canadian soldier who has served overseas missions in both the Balkins and Afghanistan I can tell you that Canada feels in no way obligated to do anything for the US. Anything we choose to do is obviously due to our commitments to the greater society of the world, our own interests or to help out a friend and neighbor.
In my understanding, and in the understanding of many governments of the world, the war in Afghanistan is far more justified then Iraq. Iraq was the American mess, they started it, they can deal with it. Afghanistan on the other hand is a war that we have been involved with virtually from the start, first in Kabul and most recently in Kandahar. The reasons for the war there are not out of any sense of obligation for the US but out of a realization that the forces at play in Afghanistan were directly responsible for 9/11 and the deaths of 24 innocent Canadians.

The you tube video is discusting, and a fake. Afghanistan is not an American war, it is a war in which the US has the majority of troops accompanied by 36 other nations. The invasion was approved by the United Nations as was the Iraq invasion which includes 42 nations including all NATO nations but Canada. Canada is not obligated to the US anymore than the US is obligated to Canada. The people responsible for putting out that video should be shot it serves no good purpose.

Because, quite obviously, a majority of U.S residents believe that the U.S is superior to all and Canada will do their bidding. Canada has helped the U.S tremendously and really, the U.S has no right to say anything to/about us.
There’s people who think that Canada is a joke. Then there’s people like you, who thinks that we’re incompetent fools. A majority of Canadians don’t like the former – but we like those who don’t consider us incompetent fools.
Sorry – just this kind of stuff makes me really angry. I live in the south (South Carolina) to be exact and all I hear is Canada being ridiculed. It’s quite pathetic, really, because we are helping the U.S in all their times of need.
